Some days ago , I was waiting at the railway station for my train to arrive, sitting there engrossed in reading a book.
Seeing me, a girl of about 10 years of age with a little boy, probably her brother, came to me and said, “Sir, please buy these pens, I will give you four pens for Rs.10. We are very hungry and we will get to eat something if you buy the pens.”
I said, “thanks, but I don’t need a pen.”
Her next question was very sweet, “Then how will we eat something?”
Looking up and seeing their hungry faces, I replied, “I don’t want a pen, but you will definitely eat something.”
I had two packets of biscuits in my bag. I took out both the packets, and handed one to each of them.
But I was surprised beyond limit when she returned one packet and said, “Sir ji! One is enough, we will share it.”
I was very pleasantly surprised to hear this.
I said again, “It’s okay, you keep both. It doesn’t matter.”
That girl’s reply shook me to my core, it really touched my soul, when she said, “Then what will you eat?”
In this world where everyday we experience the lack of kindness, the lack of compassion and the lack of empathy from people who supposedly have everything that they need, a hungry girl taught me the ultimate lesson of humanity.
As my train arrived, I smiled while boarding, with the thought that the world is in good hands and the values of caring, sharing, compassion, empathy and giving still outshine the unkindness & takers, who only think of themselves and take so much out of greed that they eat the others share as well.
To make the world better, we don’t need to wait to make the big donations & contributions, start with small steps, just show empathy and compassion and walk the talk.
Let’s make the world better, let’s not only hoard but let’s share and care, let’s show some empathy, let’s be compassionate & stay blessed forever.
