I recently learnt a brilliant technique widely used in NLP.
Future pacing is about getting people to imagine something in their lives that’s possible in the future.
For example, if you’re selling a product, you want them to picture themselves using it and imagining how good it will feel to receive the benefits of that product.
Ever walked out of a seminar feeling inspired, only to fall back into old habits a week later?
That’s where future pacing steps in. It’s a technique that helps you mentally rehearse success before it happens.
Here’s how it works: once you’ve learned something new—maybe a mindset shift or a behaviour change—you imagine using it in a future situation.
Vividly, sensory-rich. Like a movie in your mind where you see, hear, and feel yourself handling the situation brilliantly.
Why does this matter? Because the brain doesn’t always distinguish between what’s imagined and what’s real. So future pacing creates familiarity—and familiarity breeds confidence.
Whether in a professional or personal context, future pacing is highly actionable and provides a tool to build mental stamina and positive expectations.
We use it without classifying it;
e.g. in Job Interviews where you mentally rehearse every part of the interview, from arriving at the building to confidently answering the hiring manager’s questions.
Or in Public Speaking where we visualize standing on stage, maintaining steady eye contact
with the audience, and delivering a smooth presentation.
Or imagining having bagged the deal while going for a client meeting.
Future pacing is all about mentally rehearsing a future result so that the desired outcome automatically occurs.
Future Pacing is widely used as a coaching technique where the client is asked to imagine him or herself in the future in a given desired situation while trying to help overcome a challenge or limitation.
So, next time you learn a new tool at a meeting or a conference, don’t just store it, play it forward, That’s how you turn insight into action and action into transformation.
Visualise your way to a desired outcome and stay blessed forever.
