Some time ago I was invited to speak at a conference.
I was to address an audience of more than 300 peers and share my thoughts on how to grow the business and scale up.
I could see a packed hall, attentive and knowledgeable audience, Bright lights. It was going to be the first big keynote of my career.
As I was about to walk onto the big stage, with my heart thumping wildly, I looked down one last time…and froze – I was wearing two different coloured socks.
“Perfect,” I muttered.
“Out of everything that could go wrong… this?”
For a second, my mind raced. What do I do,
Do I change? Do I delay? Do I pretend nothing happened?
The organiser was already waving from the side, “Sir, we’re live in 10 seconds.”
I walked onto the stage, Every step felt louder than my words.
As I started to speak,
a voice in my head kept interrupting:
“They can see it.”
“They’re judging you.”
“Someone’s whispering about your socks.”
But something strange happened,
As I spoke,
People started nodding.
They laughed at the right moments,
They leaned forward,
They applauded at the right time.
The talk ended with a barrage of question and a huge round of applause and standing ovation.
Backstage, a senior leader walked up and said,
“Fantastic session. Loved the insight on the subject.”
Another added,
“Very relatable. Especially that last story.”
Another said, “The best session of the conference. You’ve made it so simple and your insights were very practical.”
I smiled, finally relaxed and then asked, half-joking,
“By the way, did you notice anything odd today?”
They looked confused, “No… why?”
That’s when it hit me.
The spotlight I feared never existed.
The audience wasn’t watching my socks,
they were listening intently to my story.
And that day I learned something powerful: When you focus on your purpose, people stop seeing your imperfections.
Most of the fear that holds us back is imagined.
The world is not judging us — it’s too busy living its own life.”
Sometimes, confidence isn’t about being perfect.
It’s about walking on the stage anyway and delivering your best performance.
Always remember that the Spotlight is on your performance not on the imperfections that we carry.
Deliver your best, ignore the imperfections and stay blessed forever.
