Fishing without a hook

Thomas Edison, one of history’s greatest inventors, had an unusual habit. He loved going fishing, but strangely, he never caught any fish.

Why?
Because he never used a hook.

When asked why, Edison smiled and said:
“When I fish without a hook, neither the fish disturb me, nor the people.”

It was his way of creating a sanctuary – A space where expectations didn’t intrude –
Where outcomes didn’t define the experience.

Edison wasn’t fishing for fish,
He was fishing for freedom.

Sometimes, the best way to recharge isn’t to chase results but to create space without them.
“Fishing without a hook” is about having an activity where you’re not judged by performance, progress, or productivity – just presence.

For Edison, it was a rod without a hook.
For you, it could be doodling, long walks, humming a tune, watching clouds, reading, listening to some soulful music or simply sitting in silence.

So let me ask you:
What’s your “fishing
without a hook” activity – the thing you do just for yourself, with no pressure, no expectation, no scoreboard?

For me, it’s my walk.
Just me alone – my Me time. I walk at my own pace, stop when I want to listen to a bird chirping or admire a flower in full bloom, or the perfect harmony of a neighbours garden, the amazing shapes of the cloud in the sky and many more such mundane sights.

These are my ‘Freedom’ moments.
