27th November 2025
Almost every culture in the world has held celebrations of thanks for a plentiful harvest.
For Americans, it’s Thanksgiving.
The story began with President George Washington, who declared November 26 (Thursday) in 1789 as a “Day of Public Thanksgiving, a day for Americans to come together with family and friends and express gratitude.
While the 1621 feast at Plymouth, when the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag people shared a harvest feast is often cited as the 1st Thanksgiving, it was not until 1863 when President Abraham Lincoln declared it to be a national holiday. During the Civil War, he called on Americans to express gratitude and seek unity amid division.
It’s now, the one time of the year when Americans slow down, gather, and reflect on life’s blessings.
People give back to their communities, volunteer at food banks, host charity drives, or donate meals to those in need.
The significance of turkey dinner on Thanksgiving stems from a combination of practicality, symbolism, and cultural tradition. Wild turkeys were abundant in North America, and their large size made them an ideal and economical food source to feed a crowd.
Thanksgiving now also means celebrating the spirit of kindness. As families gather, the true meaning of Thanksgiving extends beyond feasts and festivities. It is a day to pause, appreciate life’s blessings, and connect with loved ones.
Thanksgiving is more than a moment; it’s a mindset. It is a call to appreciate life’s blessings, strengthen our connections, and act with generosity.
This Thanksgiving, let us honor its meaning by not only giving thanks, but also giving back & stay blessed forever.
